It’s Tick Awareness Week - Here’s the 411 on Preventing Ticks!
It's Tick Awareness Week and Lyme Disease Awareness Month. With an estimated 300,000 new cases of Lyme Disease occurring in the US every year, it's important to remember that the peak season for contracting the tick-borne illness is late spring into early summer.
This year’s tick population is more abundant than ever now because of the warmer winter and early spring we’ve had. This means that there is an increased risk of contracting a tick-borne illness. The best way to avoid this potential health risk is prevention.
Here are our favorite DIY Tips to Prevent Ticks on Your Property:
It’s essential to cut your grass frequently because ticks are sensitive to dry conditions and do not thrive in short vegetation.
Reduce leaf litter since this is one of the main places ticks like to hide.
Create a 3-foot barrier using wood chips or gravel around the perimeter of your yard to keep ticks out.
Build a fence around your backyard that is tall enough to keep out deer and other animals that carry ticks.
Ticks prefer cool moist areas, so trimming large bushes, trees, and shrubs allows for more direct sunlight in your yard, making it a less hospitable environment for ticks.
Ticks shy away from the smell of lemon, orange, cinnamon, lavender, peppermint, rose, and geranium, so spraying these scents onto exposed skin can deter ticks from latching on.
